- Before starting thermal contraception, make an appointment with your doctor for a pre-contraceptive consultation and to get a prescription for a sperm test. If your sperm values are in line with the World Health Organization’s 2010 standards, this method is suitable for you.
- If your doctor gives the green light, you can begin the protocol for 15 hours a day, 7 days a week. Until your sperm concentration is below 1 million/ml, you are not yet on contraception. Remember, it takes 3 months for sperm to mature, so you must use another contraceptive method while in the first 3 months of the protocol.
- Once you’re safely on contraception, a quarterly spermogram is required. If sperm concentration rises above 1 million/ml, double up your contraception with another method immediately and recheck in one month. Remember: you must keep the testicles above the ring at the base of the penis for the method to be effective. The maximum duration you can use this method for is four years, because that is the longest period for which reversibility has been observed. Consult your doctor if you plan to use it for longer.
- If you decide to stop, inform your doctor, stop wearing the thermal ring, and use another contraceptive method. Wait 3 months (which is the average time for sperm renewal), take a sperm test, and then, with your doctor's approval, decide if you are ready for a baby or continue using contraception.
