Side effects

2 min read

According to Dr Roger Mieusset's research, side effects are usually minor and limited to physical discomfort, without affecting emotional well-being or sexual desire. However, user testimonials outside clinical studies suggest that some issues can occur:

  • Skin discomfort: Can happen if the ring is worn too tightly, for too long, or during intense physical activity. Skin discoloration may also occur but is reversible.
  • Urethral stricture: Can develop if the ring is excessively tight, potentially requiring corrective surgery if left untreated.
  • Urinary difficulties: Some users report difficulty emptying their bladder completely when wearing a ring that is too small.
  • Fungal infections: May develop if the ring is not cleaned properly or is worn excessively.
  • Changes in sperm quality: Sperm quality may take four to eight months to return to normal after stopping use.

All contraceptive methods come with potential side effects. If any become severe, they are considered undesirable effects and should be evaluated against the method’s benefits. If you experience pain or any other undesirable effect while wearing the thermal ring, stop wearing it immediately. Try again after a few hours. If the pain persists, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Here are the side effects observed in a 2020 study on 200 volunteers:

Very common :

  • 99% of users experienced a 10-15% reduction in testicular volume
  • Discomfort during sporting activities 14.35
  • 25.24% experienced local irritation or itching

Common :

  • Pain during erections (3.96%)
  • Pain at night (4.45%)
  • Daily discomfort (6.93%)
  • Pulls pubic hair (6.93%)

Rare:

  • Momentary urinary retention: In rare cases, a ring that is too small can compress the urethra, leading to difficulty urinating or residual leakage after using the toilet. If this happens, stop using the ring and switch to a different size.

Undetermined frequency:

  • Loss of sensation during intercourse
  • Temporary back pain
  • Skin discoloration
  • Motion reduction
  • Allergic reactions
  • Reversible alteration of chromatin integrity & reversible alteration of chromosome number - reversible under 2 to 3 spermatogenesis cycles (Ahmad et al. 2012)
  • Reversible sperm aneuploidy (Abdemhamid et al. 2019)
