A personal and political choice

2 min read

At the frontier between these two interpenetrating worlds, the question of so-called male contraception arises.

"Male contraception will become a moral and social issue, not just a health one. The aim will be to raise men's awareness of their parental and sexual responsibilities. "

Desjeux C., "Histoire de la contraception masculine. L'expérience de l'Association pour la recherche et le développement de la contraception masculine (1979-1986)".

Here is the conclusion of the Doc'éthique proposed by the Espace de Réflexion Ethique Bourgogne Franche Comté :

"Genuine equality between men and women in the field of contraception seems impossible since men do not carry the pregnancy, but fairness, shared responsibility and mutual trust are important ethical benchmarks when it comes to MC. MC calls into question our representations of women, particularly in terms of the division between productive and reproductive work. At the same time, men have little room in the public or private sphere to talk about MC. There are too few studies giving men's and women's views on the subject.
One of the issues at the heart of a couple's relationship is how to balance the risk of pregnancy and certain undesirable effects for oneself and for the other, so that benevolence, dialogue and understanding of the partner can become the major component of the couple's contraceptive management.
Finally, the delegation of biopolitics to health professionals carries the risk of looking at the
contraceptive issue solely from a medical point of view, obscuring broader and deeper societal issues
: contraception involves us as citizens."
