Low volume = repeat spermogram

1 min read

If ejaculate volume is less than 1.5 ml (WHO standards), it's difficult to draw conclusions based on analysis of other criteria such as count, morphology or head shape.

It's best to repeat the examination to obtain an analysis based on a more substantial volume, in order to obtain a reliable and representative fertility reading.

Low ejaculate volume can be related to several factors:

  • retrograde ejaculation: This can be verified by analysis of post-ejaculatory urine.
  • Obstructions of the ejaculatory ducts: May require further tests for confirmation.
  • Hypogonadism: A hormonal imbalance that can affect sperm production.

That’s why proper hydration on the day before and the day of the exam is so important, to ensure that the volume of the ejaculate is greater than 1.5 mL so it can be analyzed. Below this volume, the analysis will not have the statistical power necessary to provide results that accurately reflect reality.
